FreeRaser - File Eraser

FreeRaser

A very quick and no brainer way of securely deleting files with an easy and quick method. Simply bring up the secure shredder trashcan, drag you files over, release the mouse and watch them get eaten and secured from recovery.

Defaults to the fast destruction method so you might want to alter the setting for more security although of course it takes longer to delete the file.

Supports
  1. a fast destruction (standard 1-round filling of random data)
  2. a forced destruction (3 rounds of filling according to DoD 5220.22M standard)
  3. an ultimate destruction (35 rounds of filling with data according to Guttman algorithm).
Tested on Windows XP without problems though on Windows 7 I could not drop anything into the trashcan to be securely deleted and had to uninstall it.

LongURL

Short Urls people love them and there are a number of services available (for example such TinyURL) but then so do the spammers, phishers and malware attackers who do not want you to see the real destination of a short url.

Personally I hate short urls because of the security risk but if people are going to send them then you might want to use LongURL which allows you to see the true destination of a link when you give it a shorturl. Currently LongUrl works with 208 Url Shortening services. You can also get a firefox extension for quickness.

Simple but very useful.

2) Search for "gears"

3) Check the box for "gears" - Browser extension that enables more powerful web applications

c4) Click apply.

Once gears has installed you will be able to drag and drop content from a website into a wave, for example a photo from a website into a wave without having to download it and then upload it to the wave.

Amarok - No Sound When Playing Ubuntu 9.10

Finally finally found it. Amarok lost sound when I upgraded to 9.04 having completed an upgrade to ubuntu 9.10 i thought it was about time I got it back since I can't quite get Amarok out of my "I NEED IT!!!" media player favorite zone.

After some searching the solution is:

1) Download this file: libphonon.conf

2) Put it in /home/[your username]/.config/kde.org/ (you might need to create the directory, you will also need to view hidden folders to see the .config directory.)

3) If you don't have phonon-backend-xine install it.

sudo apt-get install phonon-backend-xine or use the synaptic package manager

4) Restart Amarok 2

You now have sound!

FSecure Rescue CD 3.11

Fsecure Rescue CD 3.11

I have yet to test the number of AntiVirus livecds I have and how useful they are as a way of removing viruses and malware (Fsecure renames virii files rather than removing them). However notably Fsecure have released a new verison of their LiveCD, which now contains a few more utlities. Needless to say I've downloaded it and it is sitting on my drive to be tested at some point.

The new tools included on the disk are:-
PhotoRec is a tool that can be used to recover data that has been accidentally deleted or lost due to a corrupted file system on a disk.
TestDisk is another data recovery tool that can be used to recover a lost partition, for example.
smartmontools contain utilities that can be used to inspect S.M.A.R.T. values of hard disks. By analyzing these numbers you may get a hint if your hard disk is starting to show signs of breaking down

HouseCall 7.0 Beta - "Personal Antivirus" Malware Removal

Last friday I encountered "Personal AntiVirus" a fake antivirus product which had got past Norton 2006 (yes you read that right) and was causing havoc with the usual scare tactics via pop up balloons. However all was not quite what it seemed.

Installing to the system was a no go. Norton 360 which the person had bought would not even run the setup nor would other setup programs run. The system clearly was being prevented from running installers and this was proven due to spybot and other malware tools failing to load and be installed as well as some none security based software.

I thought I would be sneaky and throw on panda cloud antivirus its still in beta at the current time but maybe being so new it would get past the aggressive stance of "Personal Antivirus" or whatever else was on the system. It did, panda cloud antivirus installed and a scan was off and running. It found 2 results one being "Personal Antivirus" and another trojan. It reported they were cleaned - the pop up balloons stopped all looked good until Internet explorer was loaded.

Internet Explorer was suffering from the remains of a browser hijack, which now instead of pointing to a pop up window screaming the website is trying to obtain your details or the site is infected and has been blocked a nice blank window appeared. Personal Antivirus was not quite dead. Surfing with Internet Exploer was impossible.

Online scanners were still not loading, a flush and restore of the hosts file did nothing and still not able to load spybot things did not look good. To provide the person with a working browser I managed to download (with a workaround) firefox, it installed and I updated java. It struck me. Housecall over at Trend runs under Java unlike the current Fsecure Online Scanner which requires Internet Explorer and the instalation of a Active X control. Off I went, a little skeptical but i had nothing else left to try.

I let Housecall 7.0 beta do its work and when it was done 11 trojans including further files of "Personal Antivirus" were removed. A quick reboot and everything was back to normal.

Fix a corrupted user profile - Windows Vista

If you tried to log on to Windows and received an error message telling you that your user profile might be corrupted, you can try to repair it. You will need to create a new profile, and then copy the files from the existing profile to the new one.

To create a new user profile

To create a new profile, you must first create a new user account. When the account is created, a profile will also be created.

1.

Open User Accounts by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking User Accounts and Family Safety (or clicking User Accounts, if you are connected to a network domain), and then clicking User Accounts.

2.

Click Manage another account. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

3.

Click Create a new account.

4.

Type the name you want to give the user account, click an account type, and then click Create Account.

To copy files to the new user profile

After you create the profile, you can copy the files from the existing profile. You must have at least three user accounts on the computer to complete these steps, including the new account you just created.

1.

Log on as a user other than the new user you just created or the user that you want to copy files from.

2.

Open Documents by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, and then clicking Documents.

3.

Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.

If you don't see the Tools menu, press ALT.

4.

Click the View tab, click Show hidden files and folders, clear the Hide protected operating system files check box, and then click OK.

5.

Locate the C:\Users\Old_Username folder, where C is the drive that Windows is installed, and Old_Username is the name of the profile you want to copy files from.

6.

Select all of the files and folders in this folder, except the following files:

Ntuser.dat

Ntuser.dat.log

Ntuser.ini

7.

Click the Edit menu, and then click Copy.

If you don't see the Edit menu, press ALT.

8.

Locate the C:\Users\New_Username folder, where C is the drive that Windows is installed, and New_Username is the name of the new user profile you created.

9.

Click the Edit menu, and then click Paste.

If you don't see the Edit menu, press ALT.

10.

Log off, and then log back on as the new user.

If you have e-mail messages in an e-mail program, such as Windows Mail, you must import your e-mail messages and addresses to the new user profile before you delete the old profile. If everything is working properly, you can delete the old profile.

Project Honey Pot

Project Honey Pot is the first and only distributed system for identifying spammers and the spambots they use to scrape addresses from your website. Using the Project Honey Pot system you can install addresses that are custom-tagged to the time and IP address of a visitor to your site. If one of these addresses begins receiving email we not only can tell that the messages are spam, but also the exact moment when the address was harvested and the IP address that gathered it.

To participate in Project Honey Pot, webmasters need only install the Project Honey Pot software somewhere on their website. We handle the rest — automatically distributing addresses and receiving the mail they generate. As a result, we anticipate installing Project Honey Pot should not increase the traffic or load to your website.

We collate, process, and share the data generated by your site with you. We also work with law enforcement authorities to track down and prosecute spammers. Harvesting email addresses from websites is illegal under several anti-spam laws, and the data resulting from Project Honey Pot is critical for finding those breaking the law.

Mount A Hard Disk (EXT3 / EXT4) Automatically at bootime - Ubuntu

First you will need to make a directory for the hard drive to be mounted to.

Open a terminal.
sudo mkdir /etc/media/disk-1

Then you will need to edit fstab to mount the partition on booting. I am going to assume you know how to back up the fstab file, once backed up.
sudo gedit /etc/fstab

Add an additional line
/dev/sdb1 /media/disk-1 ext3 defaults,errors=remount-ro,users,user_xattr,user 0 0

then save.

(If you are mounting an ext4 filesystem simply change ext3 to ext4)

Now we need to take ownership of the partition otherwise you will need to keep opening it as root to write to it.
sudo chown -R YourUserName:YoursUserGroup /media/disk-1

Now reboot. When Ubuntu loads the partition should feature on your desktop and accessible for read and write.

Panda Cloud Antivirus FREE

Panda Cloud Antivirus FREE - The first free cloud antivirus against viruses, spyware, rootkits and adware

I have not yet had the opportunity of installing Panda Cloud Antivirus. An antivirus using the cloud for free? Smells a little like a live beta before rolling out a subscription service but its the principle of using less resources which attracts me since traditional antivirus are extremely heavy on a system.

If those not familiar with "cloud" computing be sure to watch the video.

Since this a beta I suggest you also keep an eye on the blog as well.

Rsync - Home Backup to Secondary Drive

Objective
To backup all users home directories to a separate hard drive.
To Schedule a cronjob to run the rsync script automatically.

rsync command used
rsync -av --progress --delete --log-file=/home/yourusername/rsync/$(date +%Y%m%d)_rsync.log /home /media/disk/backup

Ubuntu Linux

Need to modify the command slightly due to permission error failing the backup
rsync -av --progress --delete --log-file=/home/yourusername/rsync/$(date +%Y%m%d)_rsync.log --exclude "/home/your-username/.gvfs" /home /media/disk/backup

Multiple Home Directories
Rather than backup a single user home directory you can backup all user home directories by using *.
rsync -av --progress --delete --log-file=/home/yourusername/rsync/$(date +%Y%m%d)_rsync.log --exclude "/home/*/.gvfs" /home /media/disk/backup

Rsync Variables Explanation
-a = archive
v = increase verbosity
r = recursive: preserve the file timestamps and permission
--progress = shows progress during transfer
--delete = delete things from the remote rsync server that are also deleted locally
--log-file = output to a log file in the user directory /home/dragon/rsync and time stamp the file name with the year, month and day.
/home =start the backup in the /home directory
/media/disk/backup = the backup location disk must be mounted

First step
Create a new file called rsync.sh and open it for editing
At the top of the file insert #!/bin/bash
Copy the command above and insert underneath the above.

Save and exit

Second step
Right click rsync.sh left click Properties
go to the Permissions tab
Make the file executable by clicking the box Allow executing file as program
Close

Third Step
Copy rsync.sh to /etc/cron.daily (or another cron directory depending on the frequency you want to run it)

Fourth Step
Configure a cron job to run rsync.sh in /etc/cron.daily as root

Web Filtering / Censorship - Multi Users - Ubuntu Linux

Situation

To achieve filtering for a users web browsing to protect minors from undesirable content while allowing adult users to entertain themselves as they see fit in the home environment.

Solution

Install Squid and DansGuardian from the Synaptic Package Manager

Squid Configuration

Edit the squid configuration file with
sudo nano /etc/squid/squid.conf

setup who is allowed access to the proxy. Find the http_access section. Uncomment these 2 lines and add your network allocations.

acl our_networks src 192.168.1.0/24 192.168.2.0/24
http_access allow our_networks

Open /etc/resolvconf and make a note of the IP address.

You need to add a dns_nameservers entry to squid.conf from IP address /data found in /etc/resolvconf

Save & Exit

DansGuardian Configuration

Edit the dansguardian configuration file with
sudo nano /etc/dansguardian/dansguardian.conf

Comment out the UNCONFIGURED line
#UNCONFIGURED

Check that the following are set:
filterport = 8080
proxyip = 127.0.0.1
proxyport = 3128

Find the Auth plugins section and uncomment
authplugin = '/etc/dansguardian/authplugins/ident.conf'

Filter Groups
We now are going to set up 2 groups the first group will be for children using the default filter settings and the second group will be for adults.

Copy /etc/dansguardian/dansguardianf1.conf
rename the copy dansguardianf2.conf

We now need to edit dansguardianf2.conf
Find
# Defaults to 0 if unspecified.
# Unauthenticated users are treated as being in the first filter group.
groupmode = 1

The default group is filtered. Change the value in the group mode to the corresponding groupmode value to 2 for unfiltered for adult users.

Save & Exit

Now we need to identify users for the two user groups. If a users is not defined Dansguardian will implement the default filters in dansguardianf1.conf thus will we only add adult usernames.

Edit the file filtergroupslist located in /etc/dansguardian or /etc/dansguardian/lists

add the users to use the adult filter dansguardianf2.conf
example
dad=filter2
mom=filter2

Save & Exit

Authentication of Users In Order That Group Filters Can Be Applied
Via the Synaptic Package Manager install
Ident2

Open a console and enter sudo ident2

Firewall Configuration
In this case we are going to use Firestarter, which is available from the Synaptic Package Manager.

Go to the tab Policy > Select Inbound traffic policy
Add the service port 113

You may need to add service ports for squid 3128 and dansguardian 8080

Final Setting Up

Set your web browser to use 127.0.0.1 and port 8080 to use the proxy.

Alternatively use Preferences > Network Proxy > Manual Proxy Configuration

Instalation complete.

Open-AudIT - Computer And Network Audit

Open-AudIT

Great way of keeping an eye on software, hardware, licenses, etc across a network. Simple to install and use. Best of all its free.

From The Site:

"OpenAudIT is an application to tell you exactly what is on your network, how it is configured and when it changes. Open-AudIT will run on Windows and Linux systems. Essentially, Open-AudIT is a database of information, that can be queried via a web interface. Data about the network is inserted via a Bash Script (Linux) or VBScript (Windows). The entire application is written in php, bash and vbscript. These are all 'scripting' languages - no compiling with viewable source. Making changes and customisations is both quick and easy.

Windows PCs can be queried for hardware, software, operating system settings, security settings, IIS settings, services, users & groups and much more. Linux systems can be queried for a similar amount of information. Network devices (printers, switches, routers, etc) can have data recorded such as IP-Address, MAC Address, open ports, serial number, etc, etc. Output is available in PDF, CSV and webpages. There are export options for Dia and Inkscape.

Open-AudIT can be configured to scan your network and devices automatically. A daily scan is recommended for systems, with network scans every couple of hours. That way, you can be assured of being notified if something changes (day to day) on a PC, or even sooner, if something "new" appears on your network."
